Why Is Breakfast So Important?

Published on August 4, 2014

Are you guilty of skipping breakfast sometimes? You’re not alone. Many people miss it for a variety of reasons, from no time through to not having any easy foods available. However, we’re always told that first meal is the most important meal of the day, but why is that?

The main reason for breakfast being so important is that it is breaking your overnight fast. By the time you wake up, your body hasn’t had food for 8-10 hours, and your glucose levels are low, which can lead to you feeling tired, and not being able to focus.

It has also been found that people who don’t eat breakfast get extremely hungry later in the day, and more often than not will opt for high-calorie and unhealthy snacks and meals to satisfy their hunger. Those who eat breakfast, however, tend to make more nutritional food choices.

This means that skipping breakfast can sometimes lead to health problems related to bad food choices and low blood sugar. It can also cause the body to go into starvation mode and slow down your metabolism, potentially leading to weight gain.

Many people also get a lot of their nutrients from breakfast foods, and those who skip breakfast can be low in fibre, iron, calcium and B2 vitamins.

For those reasons, it is important to eat a nutritious breakfast every day. There are many breakfast foods that can help you get your dietary requirements, such as whole grain breads and cereals, fresh fruits, yogurt, and fresh juices, among others.
